Object Oriented Ontology Summer School with Graham Harman

One of the most magical events we held during summer of 2022 was the Object Oriented Ontology Summer School that took place in Sirince. It was unforgettable for all of us to host Graham Harman, the founder for the system of thought, and celebrate the twentieth anniversary of his first book, Tool-Being. In the the first international event of Nomadic Thought Society, we came together with participants from countries all around the world, including India, France, the United States, Canada, Croatia and the Czech Republic.

We would like to thank Hakan Atay who offered brief Turkish translations of the lectures, which were held in English, and guided us into Graham Harman’s thought with his introductory classes. Within the camp’s program, we participated in four distinct lectures by Graham Harman after Hakan Atay’s preparatory sessions, Introduction to Object Oriented Ontology.

The realist approach embraced by the Object Oriented Ontology movement was the most striking development in 21st century continental thought. It resonated within many fields, from archeology to literature and architecture to the plastic arts in addition to philosophy. We were very excited to have this opportunity to delve in to this philosophy that denies classifying being hierarchically, counts abstract and incorporeal things as objects and flattens the ontological field with its founder as our guest and teacher.

Graham Harman, one of the founding members of the Object-Oriented Ontology (OOO) movement, will be our guest for five days in Şirince, İzmir, Turkey this summer. Harman will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the publication of his first book, Tool-Being (2002) with us. He will give four substantial lectures during the summer school and personally join our discussions and answer our questions in the reading sessions which will be based mainly on the books already available in Turkish.

The realist understanding adopted by the Object-Oriented Ontology movement has been the most salient novelty in the 21st century continental philosophy. Its influence went beyond the philosophy circles and had repercussions in many fields from archeology to literature, and from architecture to fine arts. We feel great excitement for the opportunity to be able to learn about this interesting philosophy from its founder himself; a philosophy which refuses to set out by subjecting the entities to a hierarchical taxonomy and considers not only the physical and solid things, but even abstract and immaterial things as objects, thereby getting to work by flattening out the ontological plane.

Lectures and presentations in this summer school will all be in English. Therefore a certain level of English proficiency is required. However we will do our best to provide short explanations and recapitulations in Turkish during the lectures and presentations, especially when the participants have difficulty understanding the lecturer.

Bu yaz Nesne Yönelimli Ontoloji (NEYO) hareketinin kurucularından Graham Harman’ı beş gün boyunca Şirince’de ağırlayacağız. Filozof, ilk kitabı Tool-Being’in (Alet Varlık) yayımlanışının 20. yılını bizlerle birlikte kutlayacak. Yaz okulu boyunca dört kapsamlı ders verecek ve özellikle Türkçede yayımlanmış kitaplarından yola çıkarak düzenleyeceğimiz okuma toplantılarına şahsen katılarak sorularımızı yanıtlayacak.

Nesne Yönelimli Ontoloji hareketinin benimsediği gerçekçi anlayış 21. yüzyıl kıta felsefesinin en dikkat çeken yeniliği oldu. Felsefe camiasının yanı sıra arkeolojiden edebiyata, mimarlıktan plastik sanatlara çeşitli alanlarda birçok yankı uyandırdı. Varlıkları hiyerarşik bir sınıflandırmaya tabi tutarak başlamayı reddeden, sadece fiziksel ve katı şeyleri değil, soyut ve gayrimaddi şeyleri de nesne sayan, ontolojik planı düzleştirerek işe koyulan bu ilginç felsefeyi kurucusundan dinleme fırsatı hepimizi çok heyecanlandırıyor.

Yaz okulundaki dersler ve sunuşlar İngilizce olacak. Dolayısıyla belli düzeyde bir İngilizce bilgisi gerekiyor. Fakat katılımcıların zorlandığı noktalarda ve mümkün olduğu ölçüde dersler ve sunuşlar sırasında araya girerek kısa Türkçe açıklamalar yapmaya da gayret göstereceğiz.

Lecturers

Graham Harman, Los Angeles’taki Güney Kaliforniya Mimarlık Enstitüsü’nde (SCI-Arc) ayrıcalıklı profesör olarak çalışıyor. 2000-2016 yılları arasında Kahire’deki Amerikan Üniversitesi’ndeydi; bu okuldan Ayrıcalıklı Üniversite Profesörü unvanıyla ayrıldı. 20’den fazla kitabın yazarıdır; bunların en yenisi Architecture and Objects (Mimarlık ve Nesneler) başlığını taşıyor. Hem Spekülatif Gerçekçilik hem Nesne Yönelimli Ontoloji hareketlerinin kurucuları arasındadır. Ayrıca Edinburgh University Press’in çıkardığı New Metaphysics (Yeni Metafizik) dizisinin editörlüğü, Bruno Latour’la birlikte Open Humanities Press’in New Metaphysics (Yeni Metafizik) dizisinin eş editörlüğü ve Open Philosophy dergisinin genel yayın yönetmenliği görevlerini yürütmektedir. Bir Ankaralı olan eşi Necla Demir Harman sayesinde Türkiye’yle çok yakın bağlar kurdu, Türkiye’yi ikinci evi sayıyor.

Graham Harman is Distinguished Professor at the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc) in Los Angeles. From 2000-2016 he was at the American University in Cairo, leaving at the rank of Distinguished University Professor. He is the author of more than 20 books, most recently Architecture and Objects. He is a founding member of both the Speculative Realism and Object-Oriented Ontology movements. He is also Editor of the Speculative Realism book series at Edinburgh University Press, Co-Editor (with Bruno Latour) of the New Metaphysics series at Open Humanities Press, and Editor-in-Chief of the journal Open Philosophy. He has close ties to Turkey through his wife, Necla Demir Harman, who comes from Ankara, and considers Turkey to be his second home.

Hakan Atay has been affiliated with the Department of Comparative Literature at Mersin University in Mersin, Turkey since 2017. His teaching and research focus mainly on contemporary philosophy and literature. He is the translator of books and articles by authors like Alain Badiou, Ray Brassier, Peter Brooks, Graham Harman, Robert Paxton and Fernando Pessoa. He wrote essays and articles both in English and Turkish. He is an avid reader of Graham Harman’s works since the philosopher published the article “On Vicarious Causation” in the journal Collapse in 2007.

Hakan Atay, 2017’den beri Mersin Üniversitesi Karşılaştırmalı Edebiyat Bölümü’nde öğretim üyesi. Çağdaş felsefe ve edebiyat çalışıyor. Alain Badiou, Ray Brassier, Peter Brooks, Graham Harman, Robert Paxton ve Fernando Pessoa gibi yazarlardan kitaplar ve makaleler çevirdi. İngilizce ve Türkçe yazılar kaleme aldı. Harman’ın “On Vicarious Causation” (“Vekil Nedensellik Üzerine”) makalesinin Collapse dergisinde yayımlandığı 2007 yılından bu yana filozofun eserlerini yakından takip eden bir okur.

BY BUS:
If you are arriving to İzmir by bus, there are buses leaving every 40 mins from İzmir Bus
Terminal to Selçuk. These buses operate between 07:00-20:00.
BY PLANE:
After leaving the airport, you can arrive at Selçuk by HAVAŞ (private airport transportation
service) or buses. HAVAŞ takes off directly from the airport exit. You can click on the link to

hizmetleri) (For arriving at Selçuk, you should get on the HAVAŞ in Kuşadası direction.)

BY TRAIN:
You can also travel by train to arrive at Selçuk. İzban is a railway transportation system that
travels through İzmir. From the Airport station, you should get on the Tepeköy train, then
interchange at Tepeköy to Selçuk direction. The last station in this direction is Selçuk.

BY MINIBUS:
Minibus services from İzmir Bus Terminal to Selçuk operates between: 07:00 - 20:00
Minibus services from İzmir Gaziemir to Selçuk operates between: 07:25 - 20:30
Minibuses take off every 30 minutes.
FROM SELÇUK TO ŞİRİNCE:
Transportation between Selçuk town to Şirince village is provided by minibus services.
Minibuses take off from Selçuk Bus Terminal every 20 minutes, starting from 07:40 to 20:20.
From Şirince to Selçuk, minibuses operate from 07:20 to 21:00. Taxi rides between Selçuk and
Şirince cost approximately 100 liras.
Once you arrive at Şirince village, Kayserkaya Mountain Resort is 900 meters walking distance
away. Taking the road on the left at the entrance of the village, you can see the “Kayserkaya
Dağ Evleri” signs on the way and you can reach the facility within 10 minutes by walking.

BY PRIVATE VEHICLE:

After you arrive at İzmir, you have to take the İzmir-Aydın highway. 50km into the highway, you
will reach Torbalı tollgate. 20km after the tollgate you will enter Selçuk highway. When you enter
Selçuk town, you will see the Şirince sign 200 meters away. Turning left from this sign, you will
be on the road to Şirince village.
